Milestones for miles.....

So here we are again, another school year almost done. Time no longer just marches by, it is doing wind sprints past. And as it does, it kicks up a lot of dirt. This year is no exception. In fact, seems to be kicking up a lot more dirt than previous years. This year we have "milestone" times for each child. One is graduating high school and the other is leaving grade school and going on to junior high.

Now....any parent who experienced these things know it comes with more than just feelings of pride and accomplishment....it also means a lot of check writing.

That seems to be the way we mark milestones these days...spending more money. The bigger the milestone, the more zeros we add on the checks. Some graduation events look more like a wedding than a teenager graduating high school. There are linen invitations for high school graduation parties. I have also received rather odd advertisements in the mail letting me know my graduate can have personalized water bottles to pass out. At what point is quenching another person's thirst even remotely related to my kid passing all of his classes? I'm not sure, but they they are willing to sell it.

Whatever happened to a good old fashion potluck, cards with some cash and a chuck on the shoulder saying, "well done"? Ahh...no longer is that an acceptable way to mark a milestone, now we have to have it bronzed, framed, polished and scrapbooked.

I think it all started when we all got overly excited at the first bowel movement. It set the bar too low. We clapped when they took their first steps. Every milestone meant topping the previous one. Now, we are stuck....we have to top our previous excitement or it will be anti-climatic. This is probably why the weddings are getting to be like circus events, because we have moved up HS graduations into the wedding category and that means weddings now have to top the graduation.

Maybe I should embrace the extreme celebrations of milestones....frame the linen invitations, bronze the personalized water bottles and freeze the 3 tier cake until their college graduation. I'll put a down payment on a 4 tier cake for the next graduation and start looking into places that rent circus tents for the wedding. Never let it be said I don't like a good party....especially if they have an open bar. That will probably kill the pain of the writer's cramp.....

Ahh well...happy milestones to all and to all a good night!
