April fools?

Today is April Fools Day.

The origins of the day is sketchy. It could have started when we switched from the Gregorian calendar to the Julian calander. It could have been started when people decided to plant their seeds a month too early on the calander. (Clearly some take early planting of seeds a little too seriously and as a time to play "slam the neighbor.) Or maybe when a French king decided to change the celebration of New Year's Day to January and taking the opportunity to make fun of all of those that choose to hold to tradition and celebrate it in April (kings can be so testy sometimes and quick with a quip) It could be when Noah decided to let the first bird out of the Ark and the bird decided that hanging out in the Bahamas was better than another 40 days on the rather ripe smelling Ark and never returned.

I like to think of it as a big joke on the entire population.

We willing mark a day on the calander to let people know that TODAY is the day we submit ourselves to the most childish pranks around. And what is worse, it is not restricted to just the lay people, the news people have to get in on the act as well.

Let's take my favorite news story of them all....the day the planet was renamed....Gandalf. Yes, according to the BBC news in 2004, we were named after a fictional character. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/sci_tech/newsid_3587000/3587189.stm) I'll wager that haven't been teaching that in the classrooms for the past 5 years.

It's not that I don't enjoy a good joke. I do. I have played many jokes on people. But half the fun of a joke is the surprise of it all. You don't TELL someone when you are about to play a joke, you just do it. April Fools Day is an amatuer day. It has to be like Halloween for people that are actually scary and into all that witchy pagan stuff. They must look at Halloween and just cringe. All those silly costumes and kids getting drunk in the cemetaries after watching the Rocky Horror Picture Show trying to raise the dead. That must make them crazy. Or at least it does in my head. To which on a side note, sorry for doing all those things you crazy pagan people. I was young and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

That's the way people that actually do jokes look at April Fools Day. If you need a day to pull a joke then you are just not a good joker. Wait until April 2nd and start pulling pranks and jokes, they will never see it coming. Today I put aside my silly behaviors and my bad puns and joks and will just be somber. And plot for the rest of the year.
