Tough Talk from the Home Benches

It is the day after the NFC Championship. Much to the dismay of Bears fans, Green Bay Packers won on Bears territory which now brings them to the Super Bowl. Chicago Bears were not the favored team so it wasn't a big surprise when they lost. It was disappointing, but really not surprising. I was hoping to the last turnover the Bears could pull a win out of the day.

The biggest controversy of the game seems to be the Cutler factor. He injured his knee at some point during the game and was not allowed to return to the game. This made people sound off furiously all over the social medias questioning just how tough the man was if he was willing to sit on the sidelines and not play for the rest of the game injured.

Now, let me start by saying, I'm not a football person. I watch the Bears...that's it. I am a Chicago fan and have no real interest in watching football other than the Bears. So I don't know all the ins and outs of what other players do. What I do know is Cutler was sacked a LOT during this season, one of which resulted in a concussion. I don't know if he is as tough as other quarterbacks, but in my opinion, the man isn't a wimp, as so many are trying to make him out to be. In fact, his teammates are also supporting him and the decision to not put him back in the game.

The part which amazes me is we have a lot of tough talk coming from people who watched the games in the comfort of their own homes and bars. As they sat there in their heated places, noshing on their food of choice, they are slamming a man who was getting knocked around like a pinata on a really cold winter day in Chicago, on a field probably about as soft as concrete. I'll wager if those doing the loudest complaining was batted around on that field in those conditions, they would have been carried off the field by the EMTs within the first few minutes of a game.

A counter argument is usually, "Sure, but I don't get paid to do his job. And he is paid to get smacked around by people built like tanks." Yes, but is the argument that getting the most sacks in a season just isn't tough enough? Or that he should have limped his way through the rest of the game, not giving anyone else a chance? Because when Caleb Hanie finally came out, we discovered we have some extra talent on that team.

Let's say Cutler sucked it up and played for the rest of the game...is that saying we would have won it? It seems irrational to believe that having an injured man on the field was going to give us a better chance to win. If the man's knee doesn't work, he's now a slower target for those fast moving tanks coming at him.

Ultimately, these people doing the most complaining are pinning their complaints on the wrong idea. Bottom line...the Packers outplayed us. We were not the favored team and this loss should not be a big surprise. Disappointing, sure. But not really a big surprised.

Lighten up on Cutler, he was just one of many on the team. A team which made it to the NFC Championships, someplace we haven't been in 4 years.

  1. And the update is...yes, Cutler hurt himself. Tear in the MCL. Once again, people need to be careful on how quickly they judge someone.
